I currently have 2.5 inch exhaust that dumps at the rear axle with some cheap V force turbo muffs. I cannot hear the gear drive over the exhaust from inside the car or standing in front of the car with the hood open. I had this happen last year. starter was just loud.. rebuilt or new this shim / gap check is required. check that you have .125 gap between the starter shaft and the top of the flywheel tooth. that is a start point.
